Test Drive Meme #3

Test Drive Info

Test Drive Memes take place in a virtual reality simulation occurring in characters' minds that tests them for 'fitness' before they enter the setting officially. Because it is set in a simulation created by the Sylphid, the missions, while being comparable to regular missions in the game, will be from a Sylphid perspective.
Characters will not be chipped during the simulation, and will have access to their abilities from canon, but will be chipped upon waking for the rescue.
Current characters can easily be pulled into the simulation if they are sleeping and dreaming when it's happening. The Sylphid cast a wide net with the simulation to fill it out with characters to interact with for prospective new arrivals.
Test Drive Meme threads may be considered game canon so long as all parties agree to it.
Test Drive Meme threads do count for Activity Check.

i. Awakening

It happens in a dream. You fall asleep and the next moment you feel like you're awakening again, but without any exhaustion, as if you've had a full night's sleep. You find yourself in a comfortable bed in a room full of comfortable beds, all of which contain other people waking up just the way you are. The room is large but cozy, with wide windows that are framed by light curtains, and the sun is shining in from an angle that suggests morning.

Once you're up and moving around a little, ready to explore this new place, you'll discover an open door on one of the walls in the room, through which soft strains of music can be heard, and above which there's a sign saying "Free Breakfast." Once you make your way into the room, possibly with some of the other people just waking up in this strange place, you find a buffet table loaded with breakfast foods - some familiar, and some strange, mainly featuring mushrooms and root vegetables. Quiet, soothing music is playing and there are a variety of tables with chairs available to settle down and enjoy some food.

This is just a dream, right? What could be the harm in eating a bit of food, maybe trying out some cool alien cuisine, and getting to know the other people here?

ii. The Mission: The Fungus Among Us

Once everyone has eaten their fill and gotten to know their new compatriots a little better, there is an interruption in the music playing in the room. Three musical chimes sound, and a pleasant female voice speaks.

Attention, new recruits! We have a mission for you.

The intercom goes on to explain that there is a forest of mushrooms called The Troop that borders on the northwest walls of the city, which releases spores near constantly (though more prolific in fall) that have a hallucinogenic effect on sentient beings. These spores can cause people traveling in The Troop to become disoriented and confused, experience vivid auditory and visual hallucinations, and become permanently lost. Generally, the spores aren't a problem inside the city or in the surrounding area because no one has built close enough to the Troop to suffer serious effects. However, this particular fall, the spore count has been significantly higher than previous years, and spores are making their way into the neighborhoods bordering The Troop. Even worse, the spores are having a slightly different effect on top of the usual ones.

The spores, once inhaled, are growing into microscopic fungi that populate in the brains of citizens and take over the brains of the infected. Once taken over, the citizens who are infected are servants of The Troop, and will do whatever they can to infect others by whatever means possible, whether it's by capturing spores and releasing them in people's faces or by gagging up fungi that will infect others. Beyond that, there is a kind of mania about the people who have been infected - they are wide-eyed and high-energy, they will accost random people with spores or fungi, they will chase people down on the street to infect them.

Beyond that, there's another effect. Those inflicted with fungal infection become distinctly lacking in any kind of verbal filter. They will say exactly what they're thinking, they will blurt out secrets, expose themselves emotionally, and share their innermost thoughts and dreams. After all, it's not like the individual mushrooms in The Troop keep secrets, they're all part of a larger whole, and that's how infected individuals will behave. It's as if they're sharing a consciousness, taken over by the hive mind of The Troop, and see others as simply extensions of themselves.

Will your character get infected, try to help the infected somehow, or just plain stay out of the way of all this madness?

iii. The Mission: Full Fungal Smackdown

As the infection gradually progresses, those who are infected start to become more violent, which is a big problem. The infection is slowly spreading throughout the low-income neighborhood that it initiated in and moving toward the city proper, with increasingly aggressive infected doing their best to infect others. Their methods are starting to become more aggressive as well, where before they would simply spray others with spores or present them with mushrooms, they are now altering common devices like leaf blowers to spread the spores over a broader area and violently attacking people to shove mushrooms into people's mouths, curling fingers inside their mouths to force the fungi into their victims' sinuses and infect them.

It isn't just infection techniques that are getting more aggressive. Their behavior in general is aggressive - the infected are starting fights, are attacking people, often shouting in a strange, unintelligible language. The tone of the attack is that of people defending their own territory, fighting off intruders or predators, even if the person they're attacking made no moves to strike first. Attackers may fight hand-to-hand or even employ weapons that they are familiar with to attack others, whether it's guns, knives, laser swords, or anything else they might use in their regular uninfected life. Even those who were non-combatants will use kitchen knives or other makeshift weapons to attack the uninfected.

They never attack the infected, somehow they seem to know immediately who is and who isn't part of the hivemind.

As the attacks start to really escalate and there is panic in the streets, characters will be informed that a cure for the infection has been found, and everyone who isn't infected should stop by one of the Sylphid trucks carrying syringes of the cure and load up. Anyone who's able to fight, or even who is just capable of carrying and using a syringe, is asked to take a bandeau of them and to inoculate anyone infected. Unfortunately, though, the only real way to tell if someone is infected is by that wide-eyed look, and the attack that comes out of nowhere.

iv. Welcome to the Broken World.

The simulation is over, and you don't even know how you got here from there.

All you know is that one moment you were participating in a mission to save the Sylphid children, to uphold peace talks, and then you were asleep again, after the mission was over.

You wake up in what seems like the blink of an eye, nauseous and dizzy but otherwise unscathed, possessions taken away, barefoot and dressed only in a set of plain grey clothing, like the most bland uniform ever imagined, in an empty room with empty walls and one single door with a small barred window and a single number printed just above it. The door is locked and cannot be broken by any means, you can feel your connection with any superhuman powers you had severed, leaving them just out of reach - you can feel them there, tingling at your fingertips or in the back of your brain, but you just can't get to them. There is no one to greet you or explain what's happening. You start to lose track of time, the only sound the distant ticking of what sounds like a massive clock.

Just when things seem hopeless, when you feel like you're about to go mad, there's the sound of a commotion outside your door. The sounds of a battle, or perhaps an infiltration gone just slightly wrong. Either way, when the door opens, there is a figure there with a hand outstretched.

"Welcome to the Broken World. Come on, we'll explain everything just as soon as we get you and the others out of here."

Tsukino Usagi | Sailor Moon

I Awakening

[Ohwah! That was a good sleep. Usagi sits up and stretches with a luxurious yawn. Honestly, she can't remember the last time she's been this rested. Night time is usually youma time after all, so she's pretty good at loosing out on sleep. Well, sometimes it's because she's too busy reading manga or playing games, but that's not really her fault, right? Sometimes a story is too good to put it down!

Being in a strange place is weird, but considering this place doesn't feel quite real Usagi's pretty quick to write the entire thing off as a really realistic dream. Because, after all, she never feels this rested when she's awake.

But the plate she takes from the food offering? Full of food almost to the point of overflowing? She would have done that even if it wasn't a dream. All this food, familiar or not and it's free? Oh, she's going to get her money's worth and eat a bit of everything. Looking around for a table, she finds one where someone's sitting by herself and sits down next to them. Before she even introduces herself, she takes a bite. Eyes widening she cradles her cheek with her free hand, beaming at her tablemate.]

I don't know what it is, but it sure tastes good! Have you tried it?

III. THE MISSION: FULL FUNGAL SMACKDOWN

Okay, so maybe Usagi spaced out during the mission briefing. Just maybe. But now she's paying for it, a few infected chasing her down a street as she runs for her life.

Ahhh! I don't like this. I don't want this! This dream's getting really weird!

[Only, because she's a notorious clutz, she trips on a rock and goes flying. Skinning her knee in the process which causes her to wail.]

I thought this was a dream, but why does it hurt?

[Sniffling, she scrabbles down the sidewalk on all fours for a moment before finally getting to her feet. Chancing a split second look, she doesn't see anyone so holds up a hand into the air.]

Moon Crisis, Makeup!

[After transforming, Sailor Moon glances at the infected who still haven't quite caught up to her with a glare.]

You're really mean! I hope you think about what you did. In the name of the moon, I'll punish you!

[Except she doesn't actually want to hurt them, didn't they say they were just controlled people? Summoning the moon stick, she aims at the infected before attacking.]

Moon Healing Escalation!

[They collapse and Sailor Moon cheers, striking a triumphant pose.]

I knew it would work! I did it!

[Only... is that a finger twitching? Did it only stun them temporarily? Too bd, she completely forgot about the serums.]

IV. WELCOME TO THE BROKEN WORLD.

[THIS ISN'T HOW SHE'S SUPPOSED TO WAKE UP. Usagi looks around the room, sniffling as she wraps her arms around herself. Where is she? She's been in captivity before, but never like this! She can't even transform!

She's still crying, because honestly Usagi can't resist a good cry, when the rescuers come. Though the tears dry down surprisingly quickly. To be replaced with confusion as she stares at the gun in her hand. Why a gun?]

What am I supposed to do with this?? I can't just shoot someone!

Hi everyone! I haven't been here very long, but I had a question for you.
The chips they put in us. How many still have them and how many don't?
It's kind of strange. There was a time when I would have loved to be without my powers, to be normal, you know?
But now... even when they're gone I just wanted them back straight away. Because they're a part of me and I don't feel right without them. Is that silly?

Oh! And before I forget, my name's Usagi, Tsukino Usagi. It's so very nice to meet you!

(If you keep this up, Li, Padmé will adopt you and give you a home. Somehow. Somewhere. Everyone deserves that much - even if they are super powerful soldier types.)

I'm here to listen if you ever want to talk.

(No pressure. Listening to someone else will help her forget the shock of what happened to her. Maybe. Padmé does like helping others and she does have a tendency to ignore her own worries in the process.)

It sounds delicious. (Though she only recognizes some of the ingredients.) I'll try to find you something warm, nutty and sweet.

(The possibility silences her and she looks down at herself, trying to remember those last moments. She had been so focused on the twins and telling Obi-Wan...)

I'm not sure why the droid couldn't help me, then.

(If good change is possible, Padmé will support it! Their family has suffered enough tragedy. Also it was a given Luke would tear off on an adventure/war prematurely. Of course he didn't have much choice. Thank you, Empire.)

I spent a lot of my childhood swimming. Would you like lessons? (She is ready. Luke needs to learn how to dive - cannonballs are fun! - and hold his breath to investigate the depths. Hopefully he won't find a colony of weird lizard people, though that can be fun too! Except when Jar Jar shows up.

Hugging his arm, Padmé looks at him like he placed the stars in the sky. Maybe he did!)

The first chance I get to cook, I will make you a feast.

(She takes the plate with a small laugh and chooses food that she can hopefully eat. Seeing Anakin hasn't helped, per se, but she knows he isn't dead. As long as he is alive, she will keep reaching out to him.)

[ Boba indeed follows closely behind her, following her line of sight and pausing when she pauses. If anything, he seems accustomed to shadowing like this, to taking cues and learning from observation. It's clear Layla is primed for resistance around every corner—which means he is, too. Still, this must be a coordinated assault by her faction, to have scattered the enemy's attention to this extent.

As they slip into the corridor and begin to make their way along its length, a sound catches Boba's attention from around the next corner. It had been quick and quiet—the scuffing of boots against concrete, perhaps. It could be someone from Layla's faction—or it could be a hostile getting into position ahead of them.

Boba gives his guide a rough tap on her arm, then motions for her to stop. He signals to the corner with a nod of his head. She'd heard it, too, right? ]

Doesn't matter. Get moving or they'll leave without us!

[Lio was released roughly ten minutes prior, and has been assisting the rebels in freeing the other prisoners left in this block. This cell was the last on the block, and judging by the mad dash of rebels and prisoners alike to get out the doors? The Sylphid guards are none too far behind them.

Cut off from his powers and people, Lio is just as disoriented as anyone else, with a singular exception-- this isn't anywhere near his first prison break. How and why they were incarcerated is a problem for future Lio. Right now? All that matters is busting out.

If the man in the cell is too frozen with indecision or panic to move right away, Lio will grab him by the arm and yank him from the cell by force-- make that try. Without his armour? Lio's just a (very) small young man with a borrowed gun that might weigh half as much as he does.

That said, what he lacks in height he more than makes up for in volume.]

[It's the screaming and wailing that pulls Brigitte's attention, her head quickly whipping around and her hair flying.]

Someone's in danger!

[Her focus shifts back to the infected individual howling gibberish and she's glad she has her hard light shield to provide a barrier. He runs towards her first, his hands in fists and ready to fight. Not easily deterred Brigitte rushes forward too, slamming the front of her shield into him and knocking him prone. It takes less than a second for her to deactivate her shield and the light retreats into the lion head adorning her gauntlet. Moving quickly she pins him with a knee and grabs an arm, fumbling with the bandeau wrapped around her to grab a syringe.

The infected man starts to struggle against her grasp but she manages to stick and inject him. He fights a little more and she grunts with effort until she can safely disengage. She pulls him to safety, leaving him in a semi-conscious state. Without further hesitation, Brigitte runs towards the screaming she heard earlier--though now it sounds like whomever it was can put up a fight.

Quickly rounding a corner she finds Sailor Moon proudly posing over subdued infected, and Brigitte pauses at the edge of the fight, a smile slipping to her face to find everyone alive. She wipes a bead of sweat off her brow and surveys the area.

The squire takes cautious steps forward to engage, pairing it with a friendly wave. She realizes how dangerous she may look to a stranger wearing her distinctive yellow and silver armor and resting a mace on her shoulder.]

[Luke's already finding that good change is very hard to make happen. Not that he's going to let it stop him from trying. If anything, it just makes him want to push that much harder. He gets his stubbornness from both sides of the family tree after all.]

Lessons would be great!

[He can add them to the veritable mountain of lessons he already does on a regular basis. Eat your heart out Yoda, eager student willing to learn here.

While Luke doesn't quite realize that's what the look in her eyes means, he knows it well enough. Because he'd seen it before, both in how Padme had looked at him, but also how Leia had. And even Vader. Maybe he hasn't seen his own face, but he knows enough to know that he probably looks exactly the same. The face of someone who loves their family so much it's physically obvious on their face.]

Maybe not the first chance. I think you need to take it easy for a bit. But sometime. We'll have a party!

[The food is a little more familiar to Luke. Which also means on occasion he settles bits onto her plate for her, things he thinks she'd like. Then it's time to find a table, which he settles for one near the food. In case Padme wants more. So that she doesn't have to walk too far.]

No, sorry. I'm okay. It's kind of instinct still?

[Her smile is sheepish. After all, she's been in enough combat that being chased by infected mind controlled things shouldn't come as a surprise to her. And yet somehow? It catches her by surprise every time. Maybe it's because each battle she's hoping will be her last. Wishful thinking, but if a girl can't hope, then what can she do?

Scary infected people aside, it doesn't take long for Sailor Moon to sidle up towards Brigitte with wide, blue eyes. Because a lady in real, actual armor! How cool is that? She looks like a hero!]

Are you a Knight? Because you kind of look like a Knight.

[And she should know, she was a Princess once. She's seen Knights. And this cool lady with a shield? Feels very Knightly.]

I've never seen a weapon like that before! What's it called?

[The poor, incapacitated victims get completely ignored, her attention entirely on this strange, wonderful new person who'd apparently been coming to save her! How chic and cool was that?]
shieldandarmor: (Mace to the face!)

[personal profile] shieldandarmor 2022-12-15 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[the admission of a screaming instinct causes Brigitte to chuckle a little. Though she can't relate, she does understand that sometimes you just got to let it out. But as Sailor Moon gets closer, she takes inventory of the girl in front of her. Sailor Moon doesn't exactly look battle ready, but maybe it's nanomachines? Heck, even magic? Who knows. Brigitte isn't one to judge a tiger by their stripes.

The further questions pull her out of her thoughts and she stands a little straighter as she answers.]

I'm working on it! Right now I'm a squire to a knight. Still have lots of things to learn.

[then she pulls the mace off her shoulder and holds it out to show Sailor Moon proudly.]

This? It's my rocket flail, my own design.

[She gives it a little swing away from the other woman and the head of the mace flings out along with the momentum, showing a chain attaching the head to it's hilt. It's just a brief demonstration and she quickly retracts it back to its standard form. But curiosity causes Brigitte to look back at Sailor Moon with her head tilted slightly to the side.]

But what about you? I've never seen a fighter like you either. What are you fighting with?
tiaraed: ([SM] Whatever pinch that I am in)

[The day she doesn't run screaming from being chased by bad guys.... that'll be an interesting day. And will probably mean she's finally Grown Up all the way. Maybe.

The closer Sailor Moon gets, the more impressed she is. Because wow. That armor is so cool. Which of course means she has to tell Brigitte so.]

You look really cool! And I bet you're going to be an amazing Knight one day. I just know it!

[Watching the demonstration, she lets out an appropriate amount of ooohs and aaahs. Until it actually flies out in which case she actually gasps. Because oh my god that's so cool.]

And you made that? You're even more amazing than I thought! That's so cool! You must be super smart.

[At the return question, she puffs up a little bit. Because no one's actually asked her that before? So it's neat to get to talk about it.]

You know? No one's ever actually asked me that before. It really depends on the bad guy, you know? Gotta use the right tool for the job!

[Which leads to her pulling out a short slender wand with a crescent moon on the top. She's not going to hand it over, but she will hold it out so the squire can at least see it clearly.]

For these, it means this. It's called the Moon Stick. It lets me use the magic from my crystal to heal people. Because I don't actually want to hurt them, you know? It's not like they can help what they're doing right now.

I'm fine. I'm one of the lucky ones, in a lot of ways. I don't think I really have a lot to complain about.

[At least Li's family is alive, somewhere out there, even if she can't see them. At least she was only trained in this and not something worse. She knows how bad things can get in the darkest recesses of her world. Compared to other people, she's doing fairly well. Especially now that she's here, where no one can give her orders and no one can harm her if she disobeys those orders.

Padmé is the one who died. That's substantially worse. For her, this is the afterlife, and what a strange, baffling afterlife this must be to arrive in, too.]

It is. The one good thing about moving from Beijing to Suzhou is that even though Suzhou is smaller, it has the better food. Even when I wasn't allowed to get some, even the smell is nice to have around. It makes the air sweeter. [Very few things distract her from her work, but dragon's beard candy, flower twists and sachima will make her attention divert, if only for a moment. Somewhere underneath the layers of professionalism is a sweet tooth that never got fully trained out of her.

Li shrugs, a little helpless as to how this happened.]

You'd have to ask a doctor. There might have been something else wrong that isn't obvious to you or I but a doctor could identify. I don't know much about pregnancy to start with. I'm not capable of getting pregnant so I just never looked into the science of that kind of thing, honestly.

[Aww, Sailor Moon, you're making her blush! Brigitte rubs the side of her neck with her free hand as she's getting complimented.]

Haha, thanks. Just dedicated though.

[Brigitte is very interested as Sailor Moon pulls out her wand and leans forward a bit to take a closer look. She doesn't try to grab it, though her fingers are itching to examine it, especially after Sailor Moon confirms it is in fact magic. There's gotta be some sort of technology included in it or something she can take apart to figure out how it works.]

Magic Moon Stick, huh? Are you a medic too?

[She glances over at the infected, starting to see signs of life as they begin to regain full consciousness.]

Does your Moon Stick inoculate them from the spores?

[Brigitte listens to the mission brief carefully herself, trying to wrap her head around the idea. She hasn't done much in the biology sector, preferring her simple mechanics over focusing on the how. Still, she uses a screwdriver from her belt to adjust something on the inside of her gauntlet. The other girl's words bring her from her focus and she glances over. This person doesn't seem to be equipped very well for a fight, but she's also learned that may not mean much. Her yellow and silver armor gleams and clanks as Brigitte shrugs a little, her face also drawn in concentration as she thinks.]

I guess it depends on what they're doing... Maybe incapacitate them?

[Brigitte turns properly to face Li and gives a wan smile, tucking the screwdriver away as she speaks.]

They aren't giving us much to work with, are they?

[Li checks over her knives, looking remarkably unconcerned for someone about to head into combat. Maybe she's just not capable of panicking in this strange dream, or maybe it's simply too weird of a situation for the threat to register. In the uniform from the last undercover mission she'd been on and with her hair in its' usual messy state, she doesn't look intimidating. She doesn't have to. She knows what she's doing in a more real sense than most when it comes to combat, and that's all that matters.]

Incapacitate or kill?

[It's a valid question. Those options require very different skills and approaches, and she'd rather know which she's expected to do from the outset.]

This is not the most efficient or thorough mission briefing I've gotten, no.

Well, they're still people right? Maybe they have tech that can stop the infection from spreading?

[As the words leave her mouth, Brigitte realizes how weird it sounds, especially because you'd think the briefing would mention it. She shifts from foot to foot, trying and failing to come up with a reasonable explanation for the limited information.]

I dont know... It seemed more like a history lesson than a real briefing.

[she muses for a second more. The intercom did say the people eventually lose themselves but not immediately... now everything felt a little suspect.]

At some point, personhood ceases to be a good enough reason not to kill someone. If they're endangering the lives of others, then it becomes the responsible thing not to let more people become infected.

[They're not going to get anywhere if they can't kill anyone at all. Some of these people are going to be too far gone to save. Some are going to be active dangers to everyone around them. There is such a thing, Li has learned, as an acceptable level of sacrifice. Ideally everyone would get out of this alive. Ideals are not the same thing as reality. Ideals don't stop an infection or keep others from being hurt.

It's a grim tone of voice she uses when she speaks. This is not a fun concept. No part of her enjoys what she's suggesting. But to ignore the reality of the situation will only make this worse.]

It's our duty to make sure the maximum number of people survive this. That's going to require some losses along the way.
shieldandarmor: (Serious)

[personal profile] shieldandarmor 2022-12-16 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
[she sighs, her face hardening again and gaze falling to her feet. Li isn't wrong, but Brigitte hated to hurt anyone she didn't have to. It was always a possibility that someone needed to be... removed from the equation but if there was a chance they could just be apprehended, she had to take it. The squire nods slightly at the floor before she looks Li in the face. Though they agree on the concept, she's pretty sure they don't agree on the method.]

You're right. Every fight has some loss, but I would want a chance to live. We can restrain them, quarantine infected, evacuate nearby neighborhoods--there are other options we should try before we resort to that. Maybe they don't have to die.

[Brigitte breaks the gaze and lightly rests her hand on the hilt of the flail hung against her hip.]

I should be able to stop initial infection when I fight, that will buy enough time to catch them. A few zipties and face masks will go a lomg way to stop the spreading.

I'm not saying they all have to or that it should be the only option on the table. But I have never known a combat zone of this scale to end without any casualties at all.

[It's not impossible, but it's not anything Li has known. Brigitte's training likely isn't the same as Li's in terms of what they were taught to prioritize, so Li's mind goes to different places than hers. Results were more important than personal preferences. The denser a combat zone, the less likely the chances were of no casualties. Leaving people alive was all nice and good in theory, but endangering one's self or the lives of others in order to try to achieve that was not the correct thing to do. The people who could go down as a result of that were no less valuable than the ones taking them down. And with no cure actually confirmed to be at play, it cannot be assumed that keeping someone alive is actually a kind action to begin with.

Results being her priority, Li's luminous, unnaturally red eyes lack the hesitation or usual guilty apprehension a normal person's might have. She nods at Brigitte, even if she doesn't particularly have faith in the long-term viability of this plan.]

If you have zip ties and face masks, it's a viable idea. I arrived here substantially less prepared for this situation. I'm going to focus on evacuation of the vulnerable. The fewer people are turned, the less hostiles we need to fight to start with.

[Li isn't someone who's given to piling up her plate high. She's used to waiting until after her morning sparring session to eat, once she's properly woken up, and this is not that. So she's got some rice with mushrooms in a bowl, but she's mostly sipping at her tea and taking small bites. The disruption to her routine would be too much otherwise.

Then Usagi sits down beside her and interrupts Li's carefully constructed calm. It's surprisingly hard to dislike her for it, though, given her sunny disposition.]

Ah, no, I haven't. I'm not really a big breakfast person.

But breakfast is so important!

[Usagi's face is a weird mixture of concerned and affronted. Neither emotion quite sure which one to display. But she's got concerns.]

How do you expect to make the most of your day if you don't start off with enough fuel? Both your brain and body need it you know!

[Look, the fact that food was fuel and so was important? She stayed awake during that part of science class. Got to have reasons why snack breaks and the like are important for when some people try to protest otherwise. Ahem Rei]

Here. Try some of mine. I insist!

[Not that she's given the poor girl any time to protest. But she doesn't go overboard with it, just nestling a really yummy bun and a single piece of some sort of root vegetable onto her plate. Honestly she's not really sure what either of them actually are. All she knows is that they both taste really good and so New Friend must try them.]

Oh! What's your name? My name's Usagi, Tsukino Usagi. I'm sixteen!

[Said because out of everyone here, New Friend seems to be the closest to her in age. There's a lot of old people here. Eeek.]

But dedicated people are always the most amazing! Don't underestimate the time and passion you put into what you do!

[Sailor Moon, everyone's #1 hype squad. It's like the opposite of the Kamina effect. Don't believe in her because she believes in you, believe in you because you're good and deserve to be believed in. But also believe in her please, gives her a good power boost.]

A medic? Me? No! [An awkward laugh, rubbing the back of her head awkwardly. It's not like she's a healer so much as a... honestly she's really not sure how the magic fixes brainwashed or evil people. Just knows that it does.] I'm usually more likely to need a medic honestly.

I don't know. [She glances over at where they're starting to stir. Blue eyes cautious.] I've never actually tried it before?

Maybe we should inocolate [That's not how that word is pronounced Sailor Moon, nice try. Them] just in case? Except....

[A pause, she's looking very sheepish right now.]

I dropped mine earlier and they all broke. Do you have any more?

Well, breakfast tea is important...

[And then Usagi's enthusiasm and volume has Li falling silent, letting her go off. She's concerned, and that's... well, that's very odd, because no one is usually very concerned about Li, but it's nice, too.

She wants to protest that she doesn't really need this, that she's fine, but Usagi seems so earnest the words die on her lips before she can say it. Instead she ends up sort of staring, luminous red eyes wide and brow furrowed as the other girl decides to dole out food like an odd older sister.]

Oh, uh. Thank you, Tsukino-niángniang.

[Her tone hopefully translates the politeness of the suffix even if this place can't quite find a good cross-language version of it, and Li very dutifully pops the vegetable into her mouth and eats without complaint.] That's... it tastes like really good watercress, but it doesn't look anything like it at all. [Why does this root vegetable taste like a leafy vegetable? How is that even possible?

Li dips her head politely, trying to find a way to keep the light from catching her eyes and making them glow too creepily. No need to scare off the first person to be nice to her in this strange dream.]

I'm Li Ya-Jing. Li is fine. It's nice to meet you, Tsukino-niángniang. I'm fifteen.

[She's solidly middle-of-the-pack in terms of age back home, but here, they seem to be some of the younger ones present. Age is a relative thing, she supposes.]

You can have tea too! You just need to have something with it!

Aish, what's she going to do with this girl that she's only just met but already adopted? Why fuss over her and make sure that things are okay in the future. That's what. Then there's a pause. Oooh learning time?

What's a niángniang?

[Not that she was worried about it being rude. She wasn't. It's just that there's only so much she can get based off of tone. So why not learn something new about New Friend?]

Right? It tastes just like one of my mama's side dishes despite looking nothing like it!

[New Friend seems to be the Very Polite sort who uses Lots of Manners. That's fine! Usagi might be loud and a little brash on occasion, but Ikuko-mama didn't actually raise a boar. Though she interprets the little dip as a small sort of bow, so naturally Usagi has to return the gesture. It's only polite! Which is why...]

Li-san it is then! [See? She can do politeness. Won't insist on the informalness she would normally. Since it feels like something that would make Ne- no, Li-san uncomfortable.]

So I'm older! [She won't take advantage of this fact. At least... not right now.] That means I have to keep an eye out for you. It's only right!

[A pause, before a sunny smile. This isn't awkward at all. For Usagi anyway. Usually the only things she finds awkward are when she's extra ditzy or clumsy.]

Don't worry, I'm a lot tougher than I look.

I usually just have tea and some soup broth in the morning before I work out. Then when I'm done I have some rice and egg.

Oh, uh, sorry. I'm used to speaking with people whose first language is Mandarin, and I'm from Heilongjiang, where we tend to talk in a way that's a little old-fashioned. It's what you put on a girl's name to show you respect her, especially if she's older than you. Usually it goes after the last name, for schoolmates and strangers. So you would be Tsukino-niángniang, and then I would be Li-xiǎoshēng to you, since I'm younger than you. [She pauses, then cringes at herself.] I know Mandarin is tricky for people who don't speak tonal languages, though. We can use -san if that's easier for you.

[She raises both eyebrows, surprised.]

But why would you look after me? You just met me. And I'm training to be a bodyguard, so shouldn't I be the one protecting you? It feels unfair that you have to do things just because you're a little older.

[Responsibility shouldn't fall on her shoulders automatically. That's a bit harsh, especially when it's someone as cheerful and kind as Usagi is. Li doesn't have a lot of friends, but she's pretty sure one person isn't supposed to be doing all the work. That sounds less like friendship and more like exploitation.

Li takes a bite of the yummy bun, blinking in surprise.]
This tastes a lot like caramelized sweet potato, but there's no caramel. I wonder what it's made out of? I kind of want the recipe, now. [Usagi mentioned her mother cooking. Li wonders...] Do you cook, Usagi-san? Or does your mother do most of the cooking?

There's a surprise and there's not telling them medical important intonation. He was certainly wanting to get his hands on her meddroid.

"Others. Also sliced her school's bells to play the Republic anthem." He'd heard of things over the years.

He trusted her to watch his back, but he didn't want it to be needed. "I love you too. And I will always keep you safe."
