Test Drive Meme #1

Test Drive Info

Test Drive Memes usually take place in a virtual reality simulation occurring in characters' minds that tests them for 'fitness' before they enter the setting officially. However, for the first TDM, it will be set in the real world and centered around the arrival of the first crop of extra-universal "recruits."
Test Drive Meme threads may be considered game canon so long as all parties agree to it.
Test Drive Meme threads do count for Activity Check.

Welcome to the Broken World.

You can't even remember how you got here.

All you know is that one moment you were in a world you were used to, comfortable in. It might have been a regular day or the most important day of your life, in the middle of a meal or brushing your teeth or the battle to save the world or the moment of your death. Whoever took you didn't seem to care what you were doing when you were taken, and now that you're here, they still don't seem to care.

You wake up after what seems like the blink of an eye, nauseous and dizzy but otherwise unscathed, possessions taken away, barefoot and dressed only in a set of plain grey clothing, like the most bland uniform ever imagined, in an empty room with empty walls and one single door with a small barred window and a single number printed just above it. The door is locked and cannot be broken by any means, you can feel your connection with any superhuman powers you had severed, leaving them just out of reach - you can feel them there, tingling at your fingertips or in the back of your brain, but you just can't get to them. There is no one to greet you or explain what's happening. You start to lose track of time, the only sound the distant ticking of what sounds like a massive clock.

Just when things seem hopeless, when you feel like you're about to go mad, there's the sound of a commotion outside your door. The sounds of a battle, or perhaps an infiltration gone just slightly wrong. Either way, when the door opens, there is a figure there with a hand outstretched.

"Welcome to the Broken World. Come on, we'll explain everything just as soon as we get you and the others out of here."

i. The Rescue

The moment of peace and freedom doesn't last for long.

Even while you're still disoriented from everything that's happened in the past few hours, the person who's just freed you pushes a gun into your hands. If you're familiar with guns, it's simple enough to use, with a recognizable safety and trigger, a magazine of bullets attached to the bottom. If you're not familiar with guns, well...the person who just rescued you will give you a minute-long introduction to it. Press this button, click this hammer back, pull the trigger to shoot. Nothing fancy, but enough that you won't hurt yourself or anyone else you're not supposed to be hurting. Probably.

After being handed the gun, the person rescuing you looks at you not unkindly and gestures for you to follow, leads you through a maze of concrete corridors to the entrance of the building. There, you'll find something of a small warzone, a battle in progress though almost completed, in the parking and courtyard area between several small, squat concrete buildings. There, huddled in the safety of the building's entryway, the person who just rescued you will point across the courtyard toward an encroaching patch of jungle and quickly explain the situation - you've been brought to this place by the Sylphid, long-standing enemies who will "eat your soul" and replace you if they catch you, and the person rescuing you is part of a resistance army intending to overthrow them. You're to make your way across the courtyard and into the jungle, where you'll find someone named Brycen, a blue-skinned man who will get you out of here even as the battle rages on.

The courtyard is mainly open, with a few benches and trees that can be used as cover, and there is a small group of Sylphid - the enemy, the people who took you and are now shooting at you, but who look like average everyday people - who are taking potshots at whoever crosses the courtyard even as they engage with the rebels. You'll be provided with suppressive fire from those same rebels while you cross the courtyard, but other than that, you're on your own unless you want to take the run with whoever else just got rescued.

ii. Race Through The Jungle

Once you make your way across the courtyard and into the jungle, you'll find Brycen waiting for you about a 10 minute walk in. The moment he sees you, he gestures you over and leads you a few feet further into the underbrush where there are a few All-Terain Vehicles parked in a small clearing. Shooting you a little grin, Brycen spreads his arms to present the vehicles, then heads over to the closest one. What follows is a quick explanation of how to use the ATV, a small hovercraft that can seat two. Brycen points out another ATV that is driven by a member of the resistance, and tells you that this person will guide you to the Witches Camp, where you'll be living from now on. But it's on you to pilot the ATV from here to there.

Well, you and your new friend.

See, there are half as many ATVs as there are people, and each one does seat two. Brycen gestures at the nearest extra-universal arrival and tells both of you to hop on. Now, you're both bound for the Witches Camp together, for better or worse. It's a long walk, so don't piss off your pilot!

Or overturn the ATV or crash it, because the path from the clearing to the Witches Camp is rough, without many trails or paths that have been carved out of the underbrush, something the revolutionaries have done to avoid being tracked back to their home. The ride will be bumpy, hover-vehicle or not, with a lot of swerving to avoid obstacles and dodging to avoid branches. Hopefully, you won't have a run-in with any of the local jungle wildlife, which can range from small, relatively harmless animals to lizards the size of small dinosaurs and wild cats.

It's a wild ride, but eventually you make it to the Witches Camp, a sprawling maze of low-to-the-ground buildings and markets interspersed with jungle for cover, and the rebel leading you keeps doing so until you pull up in front of Central Command. This building is one of the nicer ones in the area, and houses the Witch herself as well as the seat of the revolution. This is where all of the rebel plans are made and where new arrivals are put up.

iii. Welcome Home

Once you enter Central Command, you'll find that they've prepared space for you. First, you'll be led to the residential area of the large building and given the keycard to your new apartment, a small furnished studio apartment with a main living/sleeping area, a desk, kitchenette, bathroom with shower stall, and a walk-in closet for storage. Once you've been oriented to your new apartment, you'll be taken to pick your network device from an array of devices ranging from ultra-modern tablets that can fold into the shape of a phone to an equivalent of regular modern-day cell phones to magical tablets or books that can be interacted with by characters unfamiliar with technology. They'll also offer to alter your own phone or device to access the network, if you prefer that.

After that, you will be guided to one of the big board rooms in the Central Command, where you'll find a large spread of food on the table, ready to be dug into - all the staff at Central Command have brought food from home to share with the new arrivals. You'll also find notebooks and pens to take notes, because this is the official orientation, and you'll come out of it having learned pretty much everything about the rebellion, the Sylphid, how the rebellion originated and most importantly, how you got here and how you can go home.

This is where the rebels point out that helping them is helping yourself, because the only way to send you home is to commandeer the device that brought you here in the first place, and the only way to do that is to overthrow the Sylphid overlords.

After this presentation, no matter how accepting or skeptical you are, you'll be given a small stipend and set free to explore the city, linger around and chat over the potluck leftovers, go back to your apartment, make a network entry to meet other people, or whatever else you'd like to do. Want some new clothes? They can direct you to the markets. Looking to start learning magic? They can direct you to the Mage's Sector where you can find a teacher. Looking to dance your cares away in the wake of this terrible upheaval? They can direct you to a club in The Electric Heart that sells cocktails that'll erase all your pain for the evening.

Go wild. The Witches Camp is your new home. What will you make of it?

iv. Network

Once you've settled into your apartment in the evening, you're free to browse the internet and intranet on your new network device. Care to make an entry and meet the others in your same situation?

[ Leia had also been pocketing extras, because you never know when you're on an adventure the next time you'll get to eat, and being safe for now didn't seem to make any difference on her recent adventures with Obi-Wan. Just because something seemed safe didn't mean it was. Just because someone seemed nice, didn't mean they were. It was all very confusing.

She smiled at the offer and was getting ready to thank her for offering something that looked even better, when her child-brain decided to act it's age and get distracted by the woman's appearance, even though they were all in these terrible prison clothes still. Leia was mostly mad that she didn't have her hair the way she liked it. She beams up at the nice woman who she has no idea is her mother.

At first when she speaks, her voice is small, then goes back to her regular tone. ]

Thank you.
...Wow, you're really pretty. I wish I could go to my room and fix my hair but they keep telling us where to go and sit in boring meetings.

[ Arms fold as she crunches a cookie and somewhat loses her train of thought. ]

[Padmé would say that it is a good life lesson to learn, although never an easy one. It is experience that tends to help, that and a gut instinct. She's always stayed true to what she believes in, even though it isn't always simple. She may trip and fall, but Padmé always gets back up- sometimes with a helping hand.

There is a hint of a smile that graces the corner of her lips as she watches the girl. She'll likely have a little stock-pile before the night is done, but there is something genuinely innocent about that. Then again, Padmé has never really gone without as Naboo as a planet is blessed, but she knows that there are those out there who are not as blessed as her.

It's a small blink at the turn in conversation, from saying thank you to complimenting her. The warmth spreads to her eyes as she glances back towards the meeting. The whole situation is still strange. She knows now that the Separatists have nothing to do with it, but she still doesn't fully understand everything.]

That's kind of you to say. [Before she hums a little.] It is a bit dry, isn't it? Let's hope they don't keep us here too much longer... are you here by yourself?

[Which is a rather troubling thought. She does look young, although Padmé supposes that looks could be deceiving. Had she gone through the same experience that Padmé had since she arrived here?]

[Leia has a lot of influence from Breha, a queen who is as close to Padmé as anyone alive is going to get, probably, and Bail Organa, a senator who shared so much with the woman she doesn't know is her mother, including a personality in his youth that is unusually compatible with her own. Honestly, if they hadn't told her, it would be easy to see her as genetically their daughter. Between the two she is being raised as close to her mother's influence as possible without being told anything. That and Obi-Wan's influence, however brief, leaving a huge mark on her, as well as all the rebel alliance fighters she meet, like Tala.

All that aside, there is an intuitive gut instinct guiding the force-sensitive child, though that force influence is gone here, the mark it has made before and her general personality count for something.]

It is a little dry but there are also very good ones with fruit cream inside that are delicious.

[She tries not to look sad, but instead, very impressively independent.]

My parents are still at home, I haven't seen them here. But that's ok. I've been on adventures without them before. I do miss them though.

[Little does the child know. Let us cry behind the scenes.]

[Were she to say Organa, Padmé likely wouldn't question it either. If anything she would be happy for her friends as she knew that they had been trying to have children. They had just never been successful. While Padmé herself would like a family, it is one of the furthest things from her mind at the moment. Perhaps she would have taken the same route as her sister but then she'd been requested to be Naboo's senator.

Her mouth does twitch with the commentary. Arguably food can make things better, or at least distract at times. It can be a comfort, although eating is still the last thing from her mind at the moment. Between her arrival, these chips, the allegations between the two races... She likes to make educated choices, and so far it is only one side, although she will admit that the welcome had not been the most welcome from all here.

But she does look surprised, and a little bothered. She is young then. Eight, ten, twelve? The age is a little hard to guess, but that doesn't change things.]

Are you certain they are not here? We can look for them, if you would like? Perhaps they are still arriving.

[ That was true, Leia did keep meeting more and more people. Some even from the same world, and one she knew. As well as some who knew her, not that they had shared that with her - for good reason. Maybe Bail and Breha were here and she just hadn't seen them yet?

She looked at the woman and decided she should trust her. Because she always made great decisions about who to trust, obviously. In this case, she was right, at least.

She nods. ]
Ok. You might be right. My parents are Breha and Bail Organa. He's a Senator from Alderaan and she's the Queen. She always wears beautiful dresses and he is almost always in those scratchy Senate robes, but, I guess we're all stuck in these ugly clothes for now.

[Her mouth opens for a moment, before it closes again. That is not the answer that Padmé had been expecting and it takes her a moment to pull her thoughts back together again. She knows that they had tried for a child, but had not been successful, at least to her knowledge. Bail and her had been close, of a similar mindset when it came to politics and she owed him much. Without him, she likely would not have gotten to where she was in the Senate.

Tentative, but genuine, Padmé nods her head, bending down to her level.]

I do happen to know your father and mother, and she does have impeccable style, unlike the people here. My name is Padmé Amidala, and I am the Senator for Naboo. We've worked together in the senate, along with Mon Mothma and some others.

[personal profile] precociousprincess 2022-08-21 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ Leia was going to have to think after a good sleep how it was she hadn't seen the woman around before. Her father had other senators over all the time, and he was always happier when they were ones he got along with, like Mon Mothma, and not those who he didn't.

The ones he didn't get along with were usually aggressive and rude people, who supported things like slavery and thought the Empire could do nothing wrong and blindly followed along. The last part was a little over her head for now but she was getting a bigger picture after everything she'd been through. Leia was pretty sure she had heard the name given to her before but couldn't place it. And why had she never seen this Senator before? She would have remembered her.

Leia did remember the name of the Nabooian Queen though. She'd be in trouble if she couldn't keep monarchs of other family's straight. ]
Oh, does that mean you know Queen Sosha Soruna?

[ooc: me living on wookieepedia as i try not to mess things up]

[personal profile] democratically 2022-08-21 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Queen... Sosha Soruna? It wasn't a name that Padmé knew, although she did take a minute to run it through her head. Had she heard it in passing somewhere? She had a fairly decent memory, making a point to remember people who crossed her path, or those who she would rather not have cross her path.

Quite honestly, she didn't know anyone with that name. Like her, they might have changed it through, and Padmé didn't right away assume she was talking about a Queen of Naboo. She gave a shake of her head.]

No. I'm sorry. That name doesn't mean anything to me.

[personal profile] precociousprincess 2022-08-21 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Leia hasn't been here long enough or talked to enough people yet to understand there were people from the same world, but different times, somehow all brought here. That one would be harder for her to grasp. Despite her intellectual maturity she had never heard of time travel.

Leia squints with growing suspicion at Padmé. She said she knew her parents but she had never seen her at any of the meetings. She also said she was Naboo's Senator but she didn't know their Queen? ]

If you're the Senator from Naboo, shouldn't you know who their queen is?
democratically: (TCW: do you think that)

[personal profile] democratically 2022-08-21 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[She is a little sassy, isn't she? Padmé cocks an eyebrow at the question, because she does indeed know who the queen is. Can recite them back for quite some time, including her own reign.]

It was Queen Neeyutnee until just recently. Queen Apailana is our current monarch. Queen Réillata was the one who asked me to step up to fill the position of Senator of Chommell sector when Senator Oshadam retired.

[Leia’s suspicious face turns into a look of Absolute Confusion and her arms slowly fall back down to her sides.

This didn’t…make sense. Neither did being here at all, though. If people were from different worlds and universes and times, maybe… Maybe she wasn’t lying and even though Padmé was from her world and somehow even knew her parents, maybe …?]

Are you from the future? Does the Emperor ever get nicer?
democratically: (tcw ; excuse me)

[personal profile] democratically 2022-08-26 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[She was even more confused than before.]

Emperor, of what planet?

[She knew of Queens and Kings, some elected, some based on lineage. A duchess. Syndicates. Even dictatorships.]

I serve the Galactic Republic.
precociousprincess: @ malagraphic (kinda sus)

[personal profile] precociousprincess 2022-08-26 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Of the Empire? What else?

[Leia's face says 'DUH, are you dumb?' and I'm sorry for that, Padmé, truly.]

The Galactic Republic? Oh, that's gone now, it...went away around the same time I was born. That's why my father is an Imperial Senator now. I don't think he's very happy about it.

His boss is mean. His name is Palpatine. He sounds kind of scary, but I can't say that at home or my parents would probably get in trouble.

[There can be more than one Empire as Padmé regards her with a curious look. But the way that she says it, and what she had said previously, it has Padmé's mind thinking. Although it stops abruptly. Palpatine... Mean and scary? Imperial Senator? There is something missing, as none of that makes any sense to her.

Rallying her face, Padmé pulls it back.]

Your father, he is... around forty eight, or that is how I know him. I met him when I joined the Senate.
