The Tether App

During the night, everyone's phone or other network device has been updated with a new app - The Tether - intended for helping new arrivals find Tethers.

Unfortunately for those who don't want to participate, the prompt for the application will keep popping up on their screen until they fill out the mandatory fields and post their profile. If you don't want to participate, it might be best to fill in the blanks with prank answers!

Once posted, the app creates a profile that looks like this:

It is a simple swiping type app like many dating apps, swipe left to ignore a profile, swipe right to initiate an instant messenger conversation with the person in question on the app's proprietary chat program, complete with emojis!

I have been engaged in development of a similar hybrid, as you call it, for some years now.
So far the principles are comparable.

Then you likely have an advantage over those of us who are only familiar with one or the other. It's fascinating that two things can be combined into such a hybrid when they seem like they'd be completely different ends of a spectrum. Or are there similarities enough to be found between them?

In my opinion that dichotomy boils down to an impression of known vs. unknown, controlled vs. uncontrolled, predictable vs. unpredictable, safe vs. dangerous.
Technology is developed by people, through creative application of common principles, and thus essentially understood.
The arcane is naturally occurring, and in many cases does not follow common principles, or else adheres to them in surprising ways, so it is difficult to understand.
Difficult, but not impossible - reducing that gap simply takes work.

Yes, I see. That is an excellent way to break it down.

So essentially it's more a matter of readjusting one's perception and manner of thinking when it comes to trying to understand the manner in which magic works. A simple concept but more complicated in execution given that the mind will gravitate towards what's more familiar by way of knowledge.

Precisely.
A flexible POV and willingness to accept the unknown, even that which is inconvenient or intimidating, are essential to any scientific pursuit. The study of magic is no different in that regard.

I see. Even with new and interesting things to discover I think it would be difficult to neglect where we are coming from. Not that much can be done for it, but doing nothing is not a valid option, and I figure that any efforts we put into things here will not be wasted, at the very least.
